Today marks the 100th birthday of our namesake, Joe DiMaggio. But though a lot has changed in those 100 years, Joe DiMaggio’s example is more relevant now than ever.
Now & Then
True, Joe rose to fame at a time that was quite different from ours.
In the summer of 1941, people were still recovering from the Great Depression and dealing with America’s entry into WWII. People were anxious and afraid, and Joe’s legendary hitting Streak provided them with the inspiration they needed to help them get through some dark days.
It was a time when people gathered around the radio together to hear the latest news, instead of getting it instantly on a device in their pocket.
It was a time when you could buy a coffee for a nickel and a hamburger for a dime.
It was a time when the thought of a young Italian from a poor fisherman’s family making baseball history stood as the perfect example of the American Dream in action. It spoke to the dream of greatness we all have in ourselves — the belief that anyone from anywhere can accomplish anything if they work hard and put their minds to it.
And although some things have changed, others have remained very much the same.
Today, we’re still working our way out of economic crisis, dealing with international unrest and looking for something that can draw us all together.
But perhaps most important of all, we still yearn to believe we can achieve those big goals we have for ourselves.
Going After Your Dreams Is Timeless
The ideals that created the Streak — perseverance, grace, hard work, integrity — are the same ideals we can use today to achieve whatever it is that means personal greatness to us — whether it’s finally getting in shape, getting that promotion, writing a book or starting our own business.
What’s more, the example of the Streak shows us precisely how we can achieve these things.
Joe DiMaggio built his legendary 56-game hitting streak by approaching each at-bat with the same dedication and devotion to doing his best, and those at-bats added up into something incredible. We too can break our big, lofty goals down into doable daily steps that, added up altogether, can create something amazing.
So while we celebrate Joe DiMaggio and his accomplishments today, let’s also celebrate what those accomplishments can teach us. Let’s celebrate his Give It All example and think of ways we can adopt it in our own lives.
And stay tuned for some exciting news on how we’ll be helping you create your own legendary “Streak” in the coming New Year!
